Sensible Salting Sub-Committee

Mission of the Sensible Salting Committee

The Sensible Salting Sub-Committee was formed in 2018 to help address the negative impacts caused by the use of road salt and other chloride‐based materials for winter snow and ice management activities on surface and groundwater resources, infrastructure, and potentially human health.

Composed of experts, the Sub-Committee's charge was to develop a Regional Sensible Salting Manual for Parking Lots and Sidewalks, which will be used to raise public awareness, perform outreach, and provide step-by-step guidance on how to maintain safety while reducing overall salt use.
